History

The Vittoriano, also known as the Altare della Patria, was built to honor King Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. Construction began in 1885 and transformed the monument into one of Rome's most iconic landmarks, symbolizing the country's unification. At its heart lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, an enduring tribute to the Italian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in war, guarded by an eternal flame and a ceremonial honor guard. Today, the Vittoriano is not only a national monument but also a cultural complex housing the Central Museum of the Risorgimento. Visitors can complete their experience by taking the Glass Elevator to the monument's highest terrace, where breathtaking 360-degree views stretch across Rome's historic skyline.
