History

Designed by Nicola Salvi in 1732 and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, the Trevi Fountain marks the terminal point of the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct, which has supplied fresh water to Rome since 19 BCE and still functions today. Built against the façade of Palazzo Poli, the fountain is dominated by the majestic figure of Oceanus and surrounded by allegorical statues celebrating the power and abundance of water. A curious detail is the famous "false window" on the upper floor of Palazzo Poli, added to preserve the building's symmetry after the fountain's construction. Today, millions of visitors continue the centuries-old tradition of tossing a coin into the fountain, a gesture believed to guarantee a future return to Rome.
