History

St. Peter's Basilica was built over the traditional burial site of Saint Peter, one of Jesus' twelve apostles and the first Pope. Construction of the present basilica began in 1506 under Pope Julius II and was completed in 1626, with contributions from renowned artists and architects including Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Today, it serves as the spiritual center of the Catholic Church, hosting major religious ceremonies led by the Pope and welcoming millions of pilgrims and visitors each year.
