History

The Pantheon in Rome is one of the best-preserved monuments of the ancient world. It was first built by Marcus Agrippa around 27 BCE, but after fires damaged the original structure, Emperor Hadrian rebuilt it around 118–125 CE. The building was dedicated to all the gods of Rome and became famous for its massive dome and central opening, called the oculus. In 609 CE, it was converted into a Christian church, which helped preserve it through the Middle Ages. Today, the Pantheon remains an important symbol of Roman engineering, architecture, and history.
