History

Palazzo Colonna is one of the oldest and most prestigious private palaces in Rome, and has been home to the Colonna family for more than eight centuries. The palace grew over time from a medieval residence into an extraordinary complex of grand halls, private apartments, courtyards, and gardens, reflecting the power and influence of one of Italy’s most important noble families. The magnificent Colonna Gallery was created in the 17th century as a celebration of Marcantonio II Colonna and his role in the victory of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. With its monumental halls, frescoed ceilings, gilded decorations, and remarkable collection of paintings, the Gallery is considered one of the finest examples of Roman Baroque architecture. Still privately owned by the Colonna family today, the palace preserves centuries of art, history, and family heritage.
